Dusk

A poem I wrote three years ago for the person who was my first. A little clumsy yes but it was the first time I'd felt that way and written about it...this was also the first poem I ever performed at the microphone at a spoken word event. Apparently a tape was made and you can practically hear my hands shaking...

I would be interested in hearing your thoughts if you'd like to share.

dusk

Dark eyes
Topaz pools
Standing together
Hands on each other

Your dark eyes
Wishing wells glinting with topaz in place of pennies
My heart now wishes at that well
The darker streaks of your irises
Tempt me into their pupils
The scarlet petals of exotic flowers
Tempt insects into their secret insides
What would I do submerged in your mind?
Float in a slow bubble, like in mercury,
Seeing everything in shades of chestnut and gold
Wide-eyed and unmoving, drifting through
A mirror-hall of memory
A cat frozen in a round marble of amber
Protected and warm
Wonder and silence broken only by echoing watery sounds
Like the laughing voice of a mother recognized
And not understood during your explorations of the pool bottom
Watching the shifting white snakes of light
That roll and waver beneath the water

How cold the water can become
The sunlight of the afternoon shifting towards orange
Throwing zebra shadows across the pool
The sky pinkening and darkening
With the fallen dusk

Everyone gone
Only the water speaks
It's dark at the bottom of the pool
Forgotten and lonely
My hair fans out and explores the darkening water
The brilliant white snakes have faded and died
The numb cold of the water now betrays the just-vanished afternoon
This is life without you

Your warm hands on me pull me back to you
We're standing together
Hands on each other
Your lips warm and your hair careless
The cold pool far away and your cheek warm and surprised against mine
Loneliness banished
I love you

brought back memories of passion
like a seeing them flowing by on a wall
the old movie player noise all that is heard

but my body remembers the feelings
as your words eloquently lay them before us
